My First year as a Boston wedding photographer and locations I would like to photograph

It has been over a year now that I have been photographing here in the USA and just over a year and a half that I have been living here in Boston with my wonderful wife, Erin. After a settling period of getting my head around the move from the UK, I threw all of my efforts at making my dream of becoming a successful wedding photographer here in Boston a reality.

Last year was a really big year, filled with all the ups and downs that come with a move to a new country, the excitement of new things and the missing of those that are more familiar. Some days I felt I could have packed it all in and headed home, and others the exact opposite. Failing my US driving test the first time round (yes it is actually possible, even having driven for years) was definitely one of those low days, while sitting up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire camping with Erin and cooking the evening meal over a camp fire felt the exact difference.

So now that I have started to establish myself here in Boston and already having worked with some absolutely fabulous couples, I’m even more excited for this year and all those that I am going to get to work with.

Being one of the many Boston wedding photographers, I’m always looking at locations that would make for fantastic photo opportunities. While location is only a small part of what makes a great photo – light being of the utmost importance – I still have a list of places where I would love to photograph engagement sessions or weddings.

I would love to offer the chance for couples that would like to have their Boston engagement photos taken at a location off my hit list an extra 10X15 print on top of the other sizes that are included in the package. Even if you aren’t getting married, but would love some engagement style photos taken with yourself and your partner, then please get in touch.

So where are they then?

  1. Walden Pond – Lincoln MA. A fantastic location with some really great settings and wonderful evening light covering the eastern side of the pond.
  2. The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum – Lincoln MA. A wonderful location that I have only visited the once, and am hoping to get back to soon. Wonderful sculptures placed in a beautifully landscaped setting.
  3. The North End – Boston MA. I loved this part of town from my first visit to watch some of the Italian football (I still can’t bring myself to call it soccer) games from the World Cup in 2010. It has a great charm about the place and would make for some stunning Boston engagement shots.
  4. Bunker Hill – Boston MA. Views over looking the city and water front access. You don’t get much more Boston monumental than this.
  5. The Harbor Islands – Boston MA. After a trip out there last summer, I noted a number of places that would make for some really great Boston engagement session photos.

This is obviously just a small list of places in and around Boston that would make for some great engagement photos and as I am going through and writing these down, 20 others are popping into my head. BOSTON ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS – VALENTINES DAY 2012 COMPETITION

It has been great fun working with all these couples covering both their engagement sessions as well as some of their weddings in 2011. Last year was my first year photographing weddings and engagements here in New England and I have had a great time in my first year here. 2012 is bringing lots more exciting weddings and engagement shoots as well.

WINTER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN MASSACHUSETTS

I had met Nicole and Shane back in the spring of 2011 when I was just getting settled living here in Boston MA after moving from London. We had taken their engagement photos in the Public Gardens in Boston and you can take a look at those photos earlier in the blog. We had a great time then and afterwards I had the honor of being asked by them both if I was available to photograph their MA wedding day in January of 2012.

For a January day in New England the weather was turning out to be very nice indeed. I had prepared myself for freezing cold temperatures and feet of snow but was instead presented with 63F, the sun shining and not even a breeze in the air. This was a perfect day for Nicole and Shane’s day and a great day for me as a wedding photographer in MA to be presented with these conditions at this time of year. It meant that we would be able to shoot outside for longer before we all lost feeling in our fingers and toes.

I started off with Nicole and her bridal party and immediate family at the hotel just down the road from the Church in Randolph MA. I had the chance to meet the rest of the girls and capture the wedding preparations for Nicole and the rest of the bridesmaids. The little children their were awesome to work with and they gave me such a great reception, running up to me and giving me a hug even though I had never met them. I knew we would get some great photos with them throughout the day.

Nicole looked stunning in her dress as did the rest of her party. With her mum adding the final touches, I knew that we were going to get her some really great photos before the ceremony started. We had little while before leaving for the church and as well as capturing those un-staged moments in gave me the chance to work with some great light that was coming through the window.

After capturing these shots of Nicole, it was time to get over to the Church in Randolph to capture Nicole’s arrival there.

Being new to the region this wedding gave me the chance as a Boston wedding photographer to shoot in a new location. The First Baptist Church in Randolph is a great building and provided the perfect backdrop for Nicole and Shane’s big day. It was a beautiful ceremony and you could tell that this was a very special group of friends and family attending.

After a wonderful wedding ceremony we made the most of the unseasonably warm weather and move outside the church for the group shots. The guys were looking very dapper and Shane was looking just as smart as the day I had first met with him and Nicole back last Spring. They were all really great fun to work with.

Nicole and Shane had a wonderful reception planned and I’m sure that they had the day that they had exactly planned spending their MA wedding day in the company of great friends and family.

Landscape photography in frozen Wells, ME.

Winter Landscapes Maine

I had wanted to get out yesterday morning to get a shot at Wells Harbor, ME, that I had had in mind for a little while. With the snow covering the ground I was hoping that we would get a nice sunrise to compliment the foreground but yesterday it was lacking a little something in the sky. This morning wasn’t as colourful as I had hoped but decided that it was time to brave the cold and see if the shot would work.

I had photographed a wedding in MA last weekend and during the day the temperature had risen as high as 68F and it felt like a spring day. This morning leaving the house at 06:30 it decidedly did not feel like a spring day, with the thermometer in the car registering a rather fresh -1F and the breeze making it feel a little colder, I knew that I wasn’t going to be lasting too long.

This first shot was taken just behind Lords restaurant next to the harbor, with the marsh steaming in the background.

The next shot was taken on the drive back and again was an image that I have been waiting to capture. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a little more colour into the sky and this may be worth another visit.

Wedding Photography at the Old Statehouse Boston

When Niall and Carla got in touch with me to inquire about providing photography coverage for their Boston wedding day, I knew it would be a very intimate and special affair, in the wonderful Old Statehouse in Boston.

 As a wedding photographer in Boston I always think that there are a handful of truly special locations in this city that provide a wonderful setting to have your big day. The Old Boston Statehouse in my opinion is one of them, and it was here that Carla and Niall had chosen to have their day.

Since both are originally from this wonderful city, but are now based in New York, it was the perfect place to share this special day with the people closest to them. Weddings can involve many hundreds of guests sometimes; I have shot some with over 400 people in attendance. Having only your closest family at hand however creates a very special and intimate day that is shared by all present and I felt very privileged to have been chosen by Carla and Niall to photograph their wedding at the Boston Statehouse.

The Old Boston Statehouse is a working museum and steeped in history. You obviously have to wait until the end of the workday to have your wedding at this venue, but once you have access there are some absolutely wonderful backdrops to shoot. Most notable is the balcony from which the Declaration of Independence was read to the people of the city in 1776. This is a fantastic image to capture as part of your wedding day. To hold your wedding at this historical Massachusetts location is to share in the story of this wonderful city. Photographing a wedding at the Old Statehouse in Boston was a great pleasure, and something I hope to do again in the near future.

With the catering and organizing both being looked after by The Catered Affair, the event went flawlessly and it was great to meet with Erin Davis who was coordinating all the details. I was very pleased with the images we captured of the day, shooting with Carla and Niall prior to the ceremony and celebrations and working around the outside of the Old Statehouse. This allowed them to spend quality time with the family that they had invited once they arrived.

Boston family photography for the Ruiz holiday card

Meeting the Ruiz family in Boston was a great experience! They had contacted me to photograph them for some family portraits, some of which they were looking to have turned into a family card for the holiday season.

This was the first time I had shot a family with the aim of getting images for a holiday card, which in the US is a common occurrence, while in the UK is not something that is often done. Well, to say I had fun was an understatement. The two children were such great fun to work with and we got some really great images of them by themselves, as well as with everyone together as a whole family.

With the family pet jumping in and not wanting to be left out of the show, we ended up with a great selection of shots that we were all really happy with. I sure the recipients of the Ruiz family cards this year will not be able to hold back a smile as they get to see this wonderful family all together and having fun.

Boston family photographers get the chance to capture some really great emotions and close bonds. As a Boston wedding photographer, you get to capture the first part of the journey into creating a family. Hopefully, as I get to photograph more couples here in the US for their weddings, I’ll also have the opportunity to create images for them, of their families as they expand and grow.

FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE COASTAL HOUSE IN WELLS, MAINE

Recently I had the opportunity to shoot a family celebration at the Coastal House in Wells, Maine. This was the surprise 90th birthday party for a close family friend, and it was a pleasure for me to be able to capture the occasion for everyone.

Being a New England wedding photographer I had been in Wells not long before, shooting Joe and Lynn’s wedding day just down the road. I’m becoming very attached to this part of New England, and I’m looking forward to getting back up there in the winter months to add to my landscape collection from the area as well.

The Raposa family was celebrating “Gramma’s” 90th birthday, and Joan her daughter had surprised her by hiring out the Coastal House, (a fantastic venue for weddings and parties) and getting together family members that she had not seen for a long time. It was a very emotional day, especially when Gramma saw her two sisters who she had not seen for years. It was great to be able to capture that moment for her and the rest of her family to cherish in future.

I was also given the opportunity to create some very unique and special pictures as well. These were recreations of past photos that had been taken over 50 years before, and we had all the same people together again. The one below was taken of Joan, her brothers and her cousin, who made up their neighborhood baseball team, when she was a child. We were able to regroup them in the same positions. Sadly one member was not with us, but his grandson was able to fill his place and would have made his father very proud I’m sure.

The other, larger group photo compares to a photo that was taken at the birthday celebrations of Gramma’s mother. It is so nice to be able to capture these large group portraits of everyone together. This is why, at weddings, it is nice to take the time to get those large family group shots, because it is not often that you have so many people you know and love in one place at the same time.

Pleasant Street photography project with the Tiny Hanger

The Tiny Hanger children’s clothing store opened on Pleasant Street in Brookline less than a month ago. As part of their opening, Roberto Farren Photography teamed up with the wonderful owner of the store, Lucia, to set up a community driven photography project.

Pleasant Street has a number of vacant properties that are yet to be filled and hopefully that will change very soon. In the meantime, instead of leaving them as empty eyesores, I set about photographing local community members to fill these spaces with cheerful images of the people that make Brookline, well, Brookline.

I have recently set up my business in the Boston area, just like Lucia, and it is always nice to be able to give something to a community that you hope to be working with in the future. While I shoot mainly on location as a wedding photographer in Boston, or shoot family portraits at favorite locations in New England, this was something that I really enjoyed doing, and it offered me a very unique opportunity to capture a wide variety of people. I would like to thank Lucia at the Tiny Hanger for making this project possible and for the initial idea behind it! I would also like to thank all of those people that took part in the project. I hope that you all enjoy looking at the final display once it is up. Below are just a few great examples of the shots we got over the sittings we did at the Tiny Hanger.

Wedding Photography in Wells and Kennebunkport Maine

This weekend I helped Roberto Farren Photography at the wedding celebration of Joe and Lynn in Wells, Maine. Roberto beat his previous record for shots taken in one day, so I thought I’d help him out further by writing the blog post for this beautiful Maine wedding, while he cracks on with the post-production.

The whole wedding day was amazingly fun, even for those of us who were technically working. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, the venues and Maine coastal scenery were breathtaking, and Joe and Lynn’s family and friends were incredibly warm, welcoming, and hysterically funny. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been to such a joy-filled event, and that definitely made capturing their day a delight.They had a back garden celebration afterwards under one of Sperry tents wonderful canopies.

Even though Roberto had met with Joe and Lynn a number of times before their wedding day, that morning was my first time meeting them. I was struck by how warm they were, and it soon became obvious why they were surrounded by such an outpouring of love and happiness at their wedding celebration. Throughout the day, there were a number of touching tributes to them, and I found myself scrambling for a tissue on more than one occasion.

I was already having a great time helping Roberto capture their day, and didn’t think it could get much better, but I was terribly mistaken. Soon after the introductions, the music started. And whoa Nelly, can these families dance. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was out on the dance floor throwing shapes, giving it their all and in some cases, testing the laws of physics and gravity. It was such fun to watch, and Roberto captured some amazing shots of the action.
