Sarah got in touch with me about six months prior to shooting her wedding to Nick, and when she told me of their plans to elope and have a Fall wedding for just the two of them, I got really excited. This was the first time that I had shot an elopement, and it sounded like they had a relaxed and happy day planned out for just the two of them, which including shooting their wedding photos at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln.
Well, the week of their elopement rolled around, and what was on the horizon… none other than Hurricane Sandy, which was due to hit the exact day they had planned to marry. We knew it was going to be tough to do anything that day, so Sarah and Nick rightly decided to postpone for a couple of weeks… one of the luxuries of an elopement! Take two, and it couldn’t have been more different. The day we had was perfect, you couldn’t have asked for a better Fall day in New England. The color in the leaves was great, the temperature just right, and it was perfectly autumnal.
We started the day off by meeting at the Justice of the Peace’s house in Sudbury MA for a backyard ceremony with just the two of them, the JP and I. It was a nice shaded spot in the garden and after a short but very sweet ceremony, we headed out to the deCordova Museum for more wedding photos.
I’ve loved going to the deCordova Museum ever since my first visit not long after I moved to the US. The wonderfully kept grounds with the beautiful and fascinating outdoor sculptures create a very unique setting for you to get your wedding photos. In addition to the art, the beautifully manicured gardens and lawn are surrounded by forests and ponds, making it hard to decide which setting you’d like for your wedding portraits.
We moved through the deCordova Museum exploring all the different possibilities for shots, and with the weather being so mild, it was a pleasure to be shooting their New England weddings photos outside in this great space.
It was great to be able to work in some of the sculptures that the park has to offer, and amongst my personal favorites was the fitting named ‘Lincoln’ piece by DeWitt Godfrey in Cor-ten steel and bolts. The warm sun was hitting these rust colored steel tubes in just the right way, and we were able to get a variety of images for Sarah and Nick just incorporating this piece.
Also, you can’t photograph a wedding at the deCordova and leave without including photos of the sculpture of two large hearts by Jim Dine.
Thank you to Sarah and Nick for allowing me to be a part of such a unique and very personal day in your lives. I wish you all the very best for your future together.
